Mother Natures Painted Hills Oregon

On our way to Portland we made an overnight stop to the Painted Hills, The Painted Hills are one of the three units of the John Day Fossil Beds. When we traveled to the Painted Hills, we saw millions of years of history revealed in the layers of mountains of earth, all in color, one color at a time. The hills get their name from the delicately colored stratifications in the soil and the yellows, golds, blacks and reds, as the claystones differ with ever-changing light and moisture levels. The Painted Hills are "considered"one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon. (maybe)
Not having much time or no place to stay near, we found a city park to spend the night, so we did a quick supper and off we go.

I think we are still on the Oregon Trail

The Painted Hills early evening and at sunset.

Yes this in the town main street

Thought we were in a ghost town but there were people there

Do you think they know there is no more stage coach?

Gas station and convenience store (I think)
Ready for the next adventure.

  1. Beautiful photos. We loved to find those small parks, most are really great. Enjoying your blog, safe travels. If you make San Fran, don't miss Fisherman's warf, Alcatraz tour and China town. Definitely the Napa valley and all the wineries. If Seattle, Pike's Place Market, delicious fresh
seafood. Have fun and keep posting.
