“Never
forget your dreams die” Today’s the day we go visit Crazyhorse Monument. Crazyhorse is the world’s largest
mountain carving. The dream began in 1939 and the first blast not until June 3,1948.Sparking
the dream to create a memorial to the American Indian but with no help from
State or Federal government. To this day the Crazyhorse Memorial does not have
any government funding, it is all done through admission fees and private
funding. When it is completed????? It will be 563 Ft high and 641 feet long.
The face alone is 87.5 feet.
As
we are leaving Crazyhorse it began to hail. Fairly big drops. Later going
through the Needles we could see it along the road Wow must have really came
down there.
So on to a scenic byway called the Needles Highway. This is not for
the light-hearted, the road goes through rugged granite mountains named for the
needle like formation which seems to pierce the sky. (Get it pierce-needle).
This scenic highway was built in 1922 so it is narrow and has tunnels that are
not more than 8 feet and single lane.
Yes it was tight!!
Then we did another scenic highway called
Iron Mountain. This gives some great views of Mt. Rushmore even through one of
the tunnels. But the skies got
dark and a storm was brewing. Notice the darkness around Mt. Rushmore.
